Alstom to supply 8 additional Citadis trams for Dublin

01 December 2008

Ireland’s Railway Procurement agency (RPA) has notified Alstom of an order for 8 more Citadis trams for Dublin’s light rail system, LUAS, in an order worth over 21 million euros. With this order the RPA exercises an option laid out in an agreement made in March 2007.

Alstom has to date supplied 40 trams for the Red and Green lines of the network and another 18 are currently being manufactured at Alstom’s La Rochelle site (France), where the additional 8 trams will also be manufactured. With this new order, the Luas will comprise 66 forty-metre trams by early 2010. Alstom also maintains the trams and the network infrastructure.

Alstom, won the UK and Ireland Light Rail Award for innovation in October this year for its extension of the Red Line trams. To overcome the problems of passenger overcrowding, the RPA decided to take advantage of the modular concept of the Citadis tram design and asked Alstom to extend the shorter Red Line thirty-metre trams to forty metres. The 40% extra capacity provided by the tram extension project means that an extra 2000 people per hour are now able to ride on the line.

Including this order, 1180 Citadis have been ordered by 29 cities worldwide. Appreciated for its scaleability and design, Citadis has alerady carried 1.7 billion passagenrs and proven its reliability over more than 110 million de kilometres.
