Five successful years for Korea Train Express
The South Korean high-speed train, Korea Train Express (KTX), developed by Alstom Transport and inaugurated on 1 April 2004, has started its sixth year of service.
Operating at an average of 300 km/h, this train reduced the journey time between Seoul and Pusan from four hours and ten minutes to just two hours and forty minutes.
The success of these five years of service can been seen in a few key figures: 170 million passengers (105,000 per day), with a 97% on-time rate*. KTX has become the most popular mode of transport on the 330-km Seoul-Pusan route. Trains now represent 63% of all travel between the two cities, compared with 17% for air and the remaining 20% for road (buses and individual cars combined).
